Take the Risk
A big study came out a few years ago that really changed the way people view women in business. A group analyzed results from 21,980 global, publicly traded companies, in 91 countries from various industries and sectors and showed that having at least 30% of women in leadership positions, or the “C-suite,” adds 6% to net profit margin. No matter how this data was manipulated the same results held true. Women in C-suite positions are directly associated with higher profitability. It pays off to have women in leadership. So why not take the risk to get that C-suite job you've had your eye on? Here’s why women need to be taking more risks to find the success they deserve.
In today’s business world companies are thriving on being different and disrupting their industries. As women, we need to find the confidence and breakthrough stereotypes and our own personal fears and take risks to lead us into a new direction. Take risks that build off of your strengths.
Listen to what other people are saying and take advantage of all of the collaborative technology available to get different perspectives. This way when it’s time to take a risk, you’ve done all of your research and you’re ready to back it up. You can take a risk in business while also making sure you’ve done your due diligence. Until women are ready to take more risks like this, we won’t be able to realize our full potential.
Another way to take more risks is to learn new skills and broaden your horizons. You never know what you’ll learn about yourself by mastering a new skill. This will also make you an invaluable team member and put you in a great position for leadership. And it will give you more confidence to make more risky moves.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to fail. As Ellen DeGeneres said, “When you take risks you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail, and both are equally important. It's failure that gives you the proper perspective on success.” Failure helps you to learn from your mistakes and grow as a person. Don’t let it hold you back from taking a risk that may change your whole future.
There’s no arguing the data. Women in leadership positions increase company profitability. With this is mind, take that risk to follow your dreams and career goals. Do the research, know your strengths, improve your skills and don’t be afraid to fail.
